Tuesday November 24  there is a RepRap workshop in Ghent (Belgium).

At the workshop I will give a small introduction to the RepRap project itself, show you the steps from design to 3D print. And we will also print some models! After this short presentation we'll have a talk, and you can ask anyone any question you like. Free drinks! (Free, not as in free software)

We also offer the possibility to buy a Makerbot at the workshop (We have a reseller in Ghent! Yesss!)

This is an initiative from the yet to found Hackerspace-Gent, from TimeLab and from WVS (Workgroup Free Software) a project supported by "het actieplan wetenschapscommunicatie, een initiatief van de Vlaamse Overheid."
De workshop will be 'lectured' by Batist Leman (Me!), member of the WVS and student representative @ INWE, student Electromechanics Automation (I like to call it "Robotics") at the University College of Ghent.

As from one October I'm working partime as a research collaborator at the University College of Ghent. I'm working on a project called EHBO₂, which stands for "Eigen Hart en Bloedvaten Onderzoek & Ontwikkeling", translated: Own Heart and Blood vessels Research and Development. The target audience of this project are young people, one of the aims is to draw their attention to the importance of sports, healthy food, being a non smoker and stuff like that.

Another aim of the project is making aware the different processes of research and development. The cycle Designing, Virtual Testing, Redesigning, Prototyping, Testing and Redesigning is demonstrated. The step Prototyping is where the RepRap comes in.

At the University College of Ghent we do have industrial quality printing at the CTO - Rapid Prototyping & Tooling. But as these techniques are rather expensive they are not suited for use in our workshops. (Also these big machines are not very mobile...) In these workshops we show them the abilities of prototyping with 3D printers like the RepRap. Practically we have one RapMan (currently mine), and ordered a second. Since Friday(16 October 09) we also have a Makerbot but this bot has yet to be assembled. These bots are put into action at the workshops.

Last Thursday I had my first EHBO₂ workshop. Some pictures & info:

First we do a dissection on the heart of a pig. Students can do their own dissection in groups.

Second we do a simulation of the blood circulation in our body using water and pumps.

And finaly we printed a keychain for each participant. 32! EHBO₂ keychains!
(Luckily skeinforge has a function called 'multiply' :-)

I'm exited about how this is project going to evolve! Stay tuned!

In samenwerking met WVS@HoGent, Wetenschap maakt knap en VIA werden er 2 Arduino workshops ingericht.
De ene voornamelijk gericht naar kennissen en mensen van de departementen INWE en BINF (Ook veel docenten). De tweede, op vraag van de dienst wetenschapspopularisering, voornamelijk gericht naar lesgevers middelbaar onderwijs, en mensen van het KASK en van de Academie. Vandaar ook dat de laatste workshop op woensdag namiddag lag.

Arduino Workshop 1: (4/3/09 - 18u)

Op deze workshop waren we met 70. Iets na 18u ging de presentatie van start. De vriendelijke mensen van de vakgroep elektronica sloten mijn laptop - ubuntu - probleemloos aan op de gigantische Barco-beamer. (Een beamer dat ze hebben gekregen na het 3 maal in ontvangst nemen van de Barco prijs.)
Na de korte presentatie werden de arduino bordjes uitgedeeld. Dat verliep iets wat chaotisch, omdat alles nog verpakt was, en alle componenten nog moesten samengestoken worden.
Nadat iedereen het materiaal gekregen had begon iedereen met het installeren van de software. Na ontdekt te hebben dat je het juiste Arduino bordje moet selecteren om correct te kunnen uploaden was iedereen vertrokken. 
Sommigen hadden geen toegang to het internet, maar die konden dan, via een usb stick de software krijgen van hun buur.
Al snel hier en daar gepiep en getuut van de piezzo elementjes en geknipper van de led lichtjes. En natuurlijk ook een onuitputbare stroom aan vingers in de lucht met vragen zoals "Hoe kan ik deze lichtsensor inlezen?", "Kan ik een rij met ledjes maken om licht effecten te bekomen?", "Je kan de ledjes ook gebruiken als sensor, kijk!". Iedereen was dus zeer enthousiast!
De 3 uur durende workshop was voorbij voor ik het wist.

Arduino Workhop 2: (18/03/09 - 13u)

Op deze workhop was er 12 man aanwezig. Iets minder volk dus. Dat kwam deels omdar er geen leerkrachten middelbaar onderwijs aanwezig waren. Belijkbaar hebben die niet veel zin om zich daar een woendag namiddag mee bezig te houden, ofwel is er iets misgelopen in de communicatie.
In ieder geval was het wel weer plezant. Iets rustiger, maar daardoor ook meer tijd om de dingen wat beter uit te leggen.
Op voorhand waren er ook pakjes samengesteld, waardoor het uitdelen veel gemakkelijker verliep.

Het is zeker niet de bedoeling dat dit de enige workshops zijn in dit kader. DSO-Inwe (studentenvertegenwoording aan het departement INWE) zal een campagne lanceren om het organiseren van workshops voor en door studenten verder te zetten!

Een Arduino is een zeer gebruiksvriendelijk Open Source experimenteer bordje. Je kan er via de USB verbinding van je computer programmatjes op schrijven en laten uitvoeren. Dit alles in enkele muisklikken.
Voorbeelden van wat je er mee kan:

• Een autootje aansturen
• Geluidjes afspelen
• Sensoren inlezen (Zowel analoog als digitaal)
• … en veel meer. Kortom, het is een sleutel naar interactiviteit.

Hoe je er mee moet werken, dat zal je leren op de workshop. En niet enkel in theorie, we hebben bordjes ter beschikking waar jij kan mee experimenteren.
Als kers op de taart maken we het mogelijk de bordjes te kopen indien het je bevalt. (Aankoop prijs + gedeelde verzendingskosten < € 30) Maar dit is zeker geen verplichting.
